Thursday is also known as Vrihaspativar, Brihaspativar or Guruvar as it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Brihaspati (Planet Jupiter), the Guru of all Devas.

People observe a fast on Thursday with a belief that they would be blessed with happiness, success and prosperity.

Yellow is the most auspicious color for Thursday; hence, people observing Guruvar Vrat wear yellow colored clothes and eat yellow-colored food that are made of Aata (Besan flour) and Channa Dal.

Several local folklore’s narrate the significance of observing Guruvar Vrat. The stories differ from one region to another. However, it is commonly believed that Lord Vishnu appeared before his devotee disguised as a Sadhu and sought alms on a Thursday.

The devotee initially refused to give alms to the Sadhu. After realizing his mistake, the devotee observed a fast on Thursday and appeased Lord Vishnu. Some people believe that it was Lord Brihaspati who appeared as a Sadhu.

A number of people also worship Shirdi Sai Baba, Raghavendra Swami and Lord Dattatreya on Thursday as they are regarded as Gurus or Masters.
