Yellow is the most auspicious color for Thursday; hence, people observing Guruvar Vrat wear yellow colored clothes and eat yellow-colored food that are made of Aata (Besan flour) and Channa Dal. In the Hindu religion, Vishnu has a complexion of water clouds with a blue tint. In his four hands, he holds Shankha, Chakra, Gada and Padma. Lord Vishnu’s mount is Gadur or Garur an eagle and consort is Mahalakshmi.

In some parts of India, people worship with the banana plant and hence abstain from eating bananas on Thursday.

Several local folklore’s narrate the significance of observing Guruvar Vrat. The stories differ from one region to another. However, it is commonly believed that Lord Vishnu appeared before his devotee disguised as a Sadhu and sought alms on a Thursday.

The devotee initially refused to give alms to the Sadhu. After realizing his mistake, the devotee observed a fast on Thursday and appeased Lord Vishnu. Some people believe that it was Lord Brihaspati who appeared as a Sadhu.
